Safe as Houses: Exploring the Mystical Power of Samhain and the Triple Goddess in My Latest Witches Painting
In this witches painting, I wanted to create an eerie, autumnal scene where three women, their fiery red hair barely visible beneath long, black cloaks, stand with their backs to us. They gaze intently at a spooky, twilight-shrouded mansion. The sun is setting, casting a warm glow on the old house’s windows, while fallen leaves litter the ground at their feet. This piece is steeped in the symbolism of Samhain and Halloween, drawing on the power of the Triple Goddess as well as pop culture references that celebrate the magic of three.

Samhain and Halloween in my Witches Painting: The Veil Between Worlds
Samhain, the ancient Celtic festival that later evolved into Halloween, is celebrated as a time when the veil between our world and the spirit world thins, allowing spirits to pass through. Traditionally observed between the 22nd and 31st October, Samhain marks the end of the harvest season and the onset of winter. It’s a time for honouring ancestors, connecting with the otherworld, and embracing the transformative power of death and rebirth. The women in my witches painting stand at the cusp of this mystical moment, their cloaked figures suggesting an embrace of the darker, more introspective aspects of Samhain.
Spooky Mansion in My Witches Painting
The mansion they face seems like a gateway to another realm, a place where spirits might gather or old secrets might emerge. As twilight settles in, this autumnal scene invites us to reflect on our own journeys and the cycles of life, death, and renewal. The power of Samhain lies in its ability to remind us of our roots, our ancestors, and the cyclical nature of existence – an undercurrent that flows through the painting’s moody atmosphere.
There’s a deliberate ambiguity that leaves the true intentions of the three witches open to interpretation. Are they dark figures with ominous intentions, looming outside the mansion as twilight descends, perhaps preparing to cast a spell on unsuspecting occupants? Or are they, in fact, returning home—witches finding their way back to their own sanctuary on the eve of Samhain, a time when spirits and mortals alike cross thresholds to reconnect with familiar places and past lives? This duality invites viewers to question whether the mansion is under threat or simply welcoming back its rightful residents, adding a layer of intrigue to the scene.
In some ways, the mansion resembles an old fashioned school building, reflecting the time of year and new beginnings. I always feel that I follow the academic year more than the Gregorian calendar year. A hang up from school, maybe. A time for fresh workbooks, crisp mornings and another year of maturing.

Hecate and the Triple Goddess: Maiden, Mother, Crone
The three witches in my painting are a nod to Hecate, the Greek goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, and the night. Hecate is often depicted in triple form as the Maiden, Mother, and Crone. Her triple form represents different stages of life, each with its own unique wisdom and power. She is a powerful embodiment of feminine energy, and her presence can be felt as a guiding force for those who seek to understand the mysteries of life and death.
Symbols of Youth in the Maiden
symbolises youth, innocence, and new beginnings. She is associated with the waxing moon and embodies curiosity, exploration, and the spark of life. In the painting, although we see the witches from behind, one might imagine the Maiden as the figure at the forefront, leading the others towards the unknown with fresh eyes.
The Mother and the Fullness of Life
Represents fertility, nurturing, and the fullness of life. She is aligned with the full moon and embodies care, creation, and protection. In this painting, the Mother could be seen as the central figure, a grounding presence that offers guidance and wisdom.
Crone – Wisdom and Introspection in a Witches Painting
Signifies wisdom, introspection, and the endings that make way for new beginnings. She is linked to the waning moon and embodies death, transformation, and the acceptance of life’s inevitable cycles. In the context of the painting, the Crone may be the last witch, the one who carries the wisdom of the ages and watches over the others as they approach the mansion, a symbol of the afterlife or the unknown.
This depiction of Hecate as a trio connects seamlessly with the essence of Samhain. At this time of year, we confront the reality of life’s cycles, making space for both endings and new beginnings. The painting reflects Hecate’s role as a guide at the crossroads, embodying the wisdom that comes from understanding all stages of life.

The Power of Three: Witches Painting and Popular Culture
The trio in my witches painting also draws inspiration from pop culture. Particularly the iconic TV show, Charmed. I watched the programme for the first time this year, despite being a teenager in the 90s, and was inspired. The show revolves around the “Power of Three,” a magical principle that holds immense power when three witches join forces. In the show, the three sisters harness their combined energy to protect the world from evil, each bringing her own strengths to the group. This idea taps into an ancient belief in the mystical power of three, a number often associated with harmony, wisdom, and the cycles of time.
In my painting, the three witches embody this principle as they stand together, a unified front as they approach the eerie mansion. There’s a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose that hints at the strength they hold, both individually and as a group. The number three, echoed in both mythology and pop culture, symbolises completeness and balance, representing the unity of mind, body, and spirit or, in this case, Maiden, Mother, and Crone. By referencing Charmed, I wanted to pay homage to how contemporary culture continues to reimagine and celebrate ancient ideas of female power and magical connection.
A Reflection on the Magic of Three and the Mysteries of Samhain in this Witches Painting
This witches painting, with its autumnal setting and shadowed figures, invites the viewer into a moment of mystical introspection. The three witches, embodying the stages of the Triple Goddess, serve as a reminder of the cyclical nature of life and the ever-present influence of ancient symbols in our modern world. The mansion, with its reflected sunlight and looming structure, symbolises the unknown, the mysteries that lie beyond our understanding, and the courage it takes to confront them.
As Samhain approaches, we are called to reflect on the cycles of life, to honour what has come before, and to prepare for what lies ahead. The power of three, whether through Hecate, the Maiden, Mother, and Crone, or through the magic of popular culture, reminds us that strength is often found in unity and that wisdom comes from embracing all aspects of ourselves.
In Safe as Houses, I sought to blend ancient lore and contemporary themes, capturing a moment where the past, present, and future converge in a single, autumnal twilight. As we move into the darker months, may this painting serve as a reminder of the magic that lies within each of us, waiting to be rekindled and celebrated.
