Description
In this yellow roses painting, I wanted to create a cosy, autumnal scene. The warmth of the roses, encased in glass, contrasts with the cold scene outside the window, where the early evening draws in early.

A Cosy Rose Globe
As the nights begin to draw in and the chill of twilight takes hold, we instinctively turn to the warmth and light of our homes. This seasonal transition inspired my latest digital artwork, a piece I call “Nights Drawing In.” Painted in Procreate using exclusively airbrush techniques, this piece is a celebration of warmth, hygge, and the symbolic beauty of yellow roses.
At the heart of this artwork is a rosebush encased in a delicate glass dome that resembles a snow globe. However, instead of snow, this yellow roses painting radiates warmth through the golden flowers and soft fairy lights that shimmer gently like fireflies. The globe rests on a weathered, reddish-dark wooden table, the grain of the wood adding an earthy texture that grounds the composition. In contrast, the backdrop of the painting is a cold, blue twilight. This is viewed through a window that lets in the blue-gray tones of the evening. I wanted this juxtaposition to amplify the cosiness of the interior scene.
Adding to the charm is a single candle in the lower left corner, its soft flame symbolising the lights we kindle during darker days. Beyond the dome, out-of-focus fairy lights glow softly in the background, further enhancing the dreamy, magical feel. Every element works together to evoke a sense of comfort and invitation.
Seeking Meaning in My Yellow Roses Painting
Floral motifs take center stage in this yellow roses painting, not just for their vibrant beauty but also for their rich symbolism. Throughout history and across cultures, yellow roses have carried a variety of meanings, and exploring their significance adds an extra layer of depth to the piece.
Friendship and Joy In Western cultures, yellow roses are most commonly associated with friendship, joy, and warmth. Their sunny hue evokes feelings of happiness and positivity, making them the perfect flower to celebrate platonic relationships or to brighten someone’s day.
Jealousy and Infidelity Historically, yellow roses weren’t always so positively regarded. During the Victorian era, they were sometimes seen as symbols of jealousy or infidelity. While this interpretation has largely fallen out of favor, it’s a fascinating glimpse into how the cultural perception of flowers can evolve over time.
Wisdom and Power In Eastern traditions, yellow roses and flowers in general often symbolise wisdom, power, and even renewal. Their golden tones are reminiscent of the sun, a source of life and enlightenment.
New Beginnings Yellow roses also represent new beginnings, making them a popular choice for marking fresh starts and hopeful transitions. This meaning ties beautifully into the seasonal shift depicted in Nights Drawing In, a yellow roses painting about finding light and warmth in the darker months.

The Creative Process in this Yellow Roses Painting
Creating Nights Drawing In was one of the rare instances where I found things smooth sailing all the way. Using only airbrush tools in Procreate, I attempted to capture the softness of light, the delicate texture of rose petals, and the reflective surface of the glass dome. Airbrushing allowed me to achieve the smooth gradients and gentle transitions that give the piece its dreamy, glowing quality.
The interplay of light was a central focus throughout the painting process. The glow from the fairy lights, the candle’s flame, and the diffusion of the fairy lights in the background had to feel cohesive yet distinct. Balancing these light sources was both challenging and rewarding, as they are key to the painting’s warm and inviting atmosphere.
The texture of the weathered wooden table in my yellow roses painting adds a sense of history and character. It contrasts with the ethereal glow of the glass and roses. It’s a reminder of the tangible, grounded comforts of home. A sturdy table, a glowing candle, and the small joys of the season.
The Symbolism of Light
At its core, Nights Drawing In is a yellow roses painting about light. The fairy lights inside the dome and in the background, the candle’s flickering flame, and the golden hue of the roses. These all symbolise the warmth and hope we create for ourselves as we begin to lose the light. As the days grow shorter and the nights colder, we are reminded of the importance of these small acts of illumination. Lighting a candle, stringing up fairy lights, or simply appreciating the beauty of a flower can be powerful ways to brighten our lives and the lives of those around us.
The glass dome itself serves as a metaphor for protection and preservation. Just as the roses are shielded from the outside world, we create our own spaces of safety and warmth, especially during challenging times. The dome’s transparency allows the light and beauty of the roses to shine through, a reminder that even in our most protective moments, we can share our light with others.

Inviting the Viewer In
One of my goals with Nights Drawing In was to create a piece that feels like an invitation. The warm interior, the glowing lights, and the comforting textures all work together to draw the viewer in and make them feel at home. It’s a yellow roses painting that asks you to pause, to appreciate the small, glowing moments in life, and to find beauty in the contrast between warmth and cold.
As I look at the finished piece, I’m reminded of the countless ways we bring light into our lives. Whether through friendship, creativity, or the simple act of lighting a candle. These small gestures have a profound impact. This yellow roses painting was designed to inspire others to reflect on their own sources of warmth and light, and to cherish the beauty of the season.
May your days be filled with light, and your nights with warmth.
