Original Heron Painting
This piece was born of my love of herons. They’re not particularly common in the UK, so when you see one, there’s this moment of inertia where you stare at each other and you can’t decide if the huge, incredibly still creature in front of you is real or a statue. And then they spread their massive wings and glide serenely away like aethereal pterodactyls.
Herons are symbols of tranquillity and it’s clear to see why. I wanted this piece to have a sense of the surreal you feel when you happen upon a heron minding its own business. Most of the colours in this piece are grey: slate grey, blue grey, pale grey. The subject stares defiantly at the viewer, her pale grey eyes staring unblinkingly into yours; she is comfortable in her own skin and there’s a sense of peace and quiet confidence to her. There are three springs of pussy willow protruding from behind her – these fluffy, pale grey nubs giving a further sense of tactility and symbolising winter.
