I really like using graphite pencil to create contrasting light and shadows. I’d treated myself to some new pencils made entirely out of graphite when I decided to draw this and my hands were black afterwards. But then I never really feel like I’m creating unless I get a bit dirty in the process.

This picture seems to denote a certain vulnerability and anguish – the way the subject has her hands wrapped around her so tightly. And yet there is obvious strength too, which gives it a sense of defiance.
